EITI Sierra Leone Visits Liberia on Peer Exchange and Learning Mission

The Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiatives (LEITI) is hosting a high-level delegation from the Sierra Leone Extractive Industries Transparency Initiatives (SLEITI) this week in Monrovia.

The 10-man delegation arrived in the country yesterday evening, May 5, 2024, for a five-day peer exchange and learning mission.

The peer exchange and learning program between the two countries will take place from May 6–10, 2024.

The latest development, which highlights notable signs of progress, challenges, and prospects, will document lessons learned for both countries as they continue to implement the EITI framework respectively.

The high-level mission will further strengthen the two countries’ implementation outlook as they both shed light on their adoptive methods of EITI implementation at the different levels of the respective governance structures of their extractive industries.

LEITI Boss, Mr. Jeffrey N. Yates, noted that SLEITI’s peer exchange mission to Liberia demonstrates the strong progress that Liberia has made over the years in implementing the EITI standards and principles.

It can be recalled that Sierra Leone’s EITI scored high in EITI validation, demonstrating solid adherence to the EITI Standards and Principles.

Yates emphasized that the peer exchange and learning mission will concentrate on the 2023 EITI Standard with a specific focus on three thematic EITI requirements that Liberia has shown strong implementation progress such as Beneficial Ownership Transparency, Contract Transparency, and Anti-Corruption.

LEITI believes that such a peer exchange and learning mission will better assist Liberia in preparing for its next validation which is expected to commence in October 2025.

The peer exchange program, which is sponsored GIZ-Rego project and co-funded by the European Union and the BMZ, will bring together natural resource experts and anti-corruption specialists.

The Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI) is a part of the global Standard Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) that promotes revenue transparency in the extractive sectors in resource-rich countries.
