Monrovia – Emotional scenes unfolded as family members, led by main victim Jessica Lloyd, confronted US Missionary Lucas Richard after his acquittal of attempted murder charges by Criminal Court B.

The verdict, delivered on Wednesday, saw Richard cleared of attempted murder against his Liberian wife, Jessica Lloyd, sparking outrage and accusations of injustice from her family and advocates.

With voices raised in curses, Lloyd’s family expressed their anguish as Richard walked free from court without facing conviction after proceedings in Criminal Court B.

In the wake of the controversial verdict, calls for the impeachment of Presiding Judge Nelson Chineh have intensified. Bong County District 6 Representative Moima Briggs Mensah joined the chorus of voices condemning the decision, urging for a retrial and criticizing what she sees as a bias in favor of foreign nationals within Liberia’s legal system.

The ruling has stirred widespread disbelief and condemnation, particularly among women’s advocacy groups, who view it as a setback for justice. Critics argue that the court’s decision trivializes the severity of the case and undermines Lloyd’s pursuit of justice following the alleged attack.

Lloyd herself has expressed disbelief at the verdict, stating that the evidence against Richard was compelling. Her reaction resonates with many who perceive the outcome as a failure of the Liberian legal system to deliver justice.

The case has ignited discussions about the integrity of the justice system and raised concerns about potential disparities in legal outcomes involving international defendants. Many question whether similar leniency would be shown if the roles were reversed, with an African national facing charges in the United States.

Reports indicating Richard’s possible departure from the country following his acquittal have only fueled calls for a retrial and heightened scrutiny of Liberia’s handling of the case.

As demands for justice echo louder, attention turns to whether the legal system will uphold principles of fairness and accountability for all parties involved.

Meanwhile, Judge Nelson Chineh, who delivered the non-guilty verdict, cited legal arguments and testimonies that informed the court’s decision. He emphasized the insufficiency of evidence to prosecute Richard, noting that Jessica’s inability to identify her attacker while unconscious weakened the case.

Furthermore, Judge Chineh highlighted concerns about witness testimony, suggesting influence and lack of validation for the commission of the crime. However, allegations of bribery involving a group of lawyers have cast doubt on the integrity of the legal process, further eroding public trust in the justice system.
